Why You Need a Professional to Clean Your Ashtabula Home After a Fire

11/30/2022 (Permalink)

house with burnt roof Did you know that a small fire in the home can cause a whole lot of damage? Believe it or not, it does.

Did you know that a small fire in the home can cause a whole lot of damage? Believe it or not, it does. From smoke, to soot, to damaged belongings, the cleanup process can be quite grueling for someone who is not a highly trained restoration technician.

Why Do You Need a Professional?

Restoration professionals immediately know where to look to find damage that an untrained person would not be familiar with. Knowing the extent of the fire damage is key to creating an action plan. In addition, restoration professionals restore belongings and your home rather than throwing out and buying new. Our “restore first” mentality reduces interruption and gets you back to your life.

What is the Difference Between Smoke and Soot?

Smoke and soot are commonly misunderstood. Soot comes from smoke, while smoke is a result of fire. “Smoke is a collection of tiny unburnt particles – very small carbon particles and tiny droplets of tar.” As a result, smoke is very dangerous to inhale, as it contains many things that we are not meant to inhale."

Soot, sometimes called lampblack or carbon black, is a fine black or brown powder that can be slightly sticky and is a product of incomplete combustion.” Since soot is a slightly sticky powder, it rests in all crevices of a home that has experienced fire damage. It sticks to the walls, the ceiling, anything that it can find.

To restore your home of soot and smoke damage takes professionals with an eye for detail. Learn more about Smoke and Soot.

As summer is wrapping up and parents are sending children off to college, you are going to begin moving furniture in and out of apartments, dorms, houses, etc. As you move your children into their new homes, SERVPRO has tips on the best way to do it, so you are least likely for a fire to spread in an unfortunate event.

Petroleum is being used in most of the furniture that is being produced and put in our homes as of late, and an article from the NFPA further demonstrates this. The NFPA states, “Research shows that older, legacy furnishings made of leather, wool, and cotton do not burn in the same manner. Studies by UL have confirmed that rooms filled with synthetic furniture that are set on fire reach dangerous temperatures quicker than similar rooms filled with legacy furnishings.” So, as you and your children are trying to be the best interior designers, we must remember to take safety measures such as checking that smoke detectors and sprinklers are up to date.

Spring Weather Brings Back a Fire Hazard in Your Warren Home

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Two HVAC units sit outside of a house. If you do experience fire damage from your Air Conditioner (or any other source) call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County!

Spring is right around the corner in Ohio! Time to turn off those heaters, get ready for some sun, and say goodbye to the snow. Winters in Warren can be brutal so there’s no denying there’s excitement towards the Springtime. However, with this warmer weather comes a new fire hazard, your Air Conditioner.

Here are some ways your Air Conditioner could cause you problems, and how to prevent them from happening in your Warren Home:

  • Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Clean

Cleaning your Air Conditioner properly is very important to making sure it doesn’t spark a fire. Accumulation of dust and dirt in your air ducts could be ignited. It could also create some blockage in air flow that could harm your unit.

  • Cluttered Space

This is another important situation to avoid. Cluttering up the space around your Air Conditioner can be dangerous, especially if the items are flammable. Keep at least 3 feet of space between any items and your AC.

  • Faulty/Loose Parts

This last measure may be most important to keep in mind. Faulty connections, loose gas lines, and exposed wires are all MAJOR fire hazards. It’s important to check your AC unit frequently to see if it needs maintenance.

If you do experience fire damage from your Air Conditioner (or any other source) call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County! We have the specialized training and equipment to get your Warren home to preloss condition fast. Visit our Website or call us at (330) 392-6355 for all your fire restoration needs.

A Forgotten Fire Hazard in Your Warren Home

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

Picture shows a man on a ladder with a hose cleaning out the duct work in his celling. Air ducts and vents can get hot with the heat running. Dust sitting on top of those grates can get ignited if it becomes too hot.

We are all aware of the major fire hazards in our homes such as cooking, lighting candles, and electrical equipment, to name a few. However, there’s one sneaky fire hazard we don’t often think of. Dust accumulating on our air ducts is a fire hazard, that dust is flammable! While we’re kicking up the heat this winter, make sure those air ducts are clean.

Dust on your air vents can be ignited in two ways: by coming in contact with a hot surface, or by being sparked by energy. Dust can accumulate from the vents and into the furnace where it can become very hot. If your furnace is old it might spark occasionally, setting this dry dust on fire immediately.

Air ducts and vents can get hot with the heat running. Dust sitting on top of those grates can get ignited if it becomes too hot. The best way to reduce the risk is to regularly check your air ducts and furnace for dust. Don’t let this forgotten fire hazard cause damage to your Warren home.

If you do experience a fire due to this dust, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County can help. If your Warren home experiences damage, we are experienced and ready to respond. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is faster to any size disaster and has a full array of fire damage restoration services including:

Space Heaters Need Space

11/30/2020 (Permalink)

image of space heater in a living space while turned on and running The heater should have at least 3-foot breathing space on all sides. It should also be on stable ground.

We have made it to December in 2020! With Christmas season upon us---we all want that warm, cozy feeling in our homes. With some NE Ohio homes feeling a little drafty from the cold, outside air, you may want to utilize a space heater in your home. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County wants you to stay safe this winter with some space heater tips.

CPSC estimates “that portable electric heaters are involved in about 1,100 fires per year, resulting in about 50 deaths, dozens of injuries and millions of dollars in property loss. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 32 percent of the home heating fires involve space heaters, resulting in about 80 percent of home heating fire deaths in the United States.”

These are some hefty numbers! Therefore, there are a few tips you should know before purchasing a space heater. First, make sure your smoke alarms are up and working on every floor of your home. Secondly, only purchase a space heater with a seal of a nationally recognized testing laboratory. This seal ensures that the heater will not ignite tissue if it happens to get tipped over.

When using a space heater in your home, the most important thing to remember is to keep it away from anything flammable. The heater should have at least 3-foot breathing space on all sides. It should also be on stable ground. Never use a surface where the heater can be easily knocked over. Heaters should also never be left on while you are sleeping or not in the room. Make sure when using the heater, it is plugged directly into the wall and never use an extension cord or a power strip. Lastly, make sure when the heater is turned on that all the doors to the room are open to reduce exposure to indoor pollutants, such as carbon monoxide.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County has seen its share of fire damage and the devastation space heaters can cause. Always use the heater accordingly. Girard Thanksgiving Fire Prevention

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

image of large flame over a pan with large amount of oil Most fires occur because of the oil. It can spill and tip over which leads to fires, burns and other serious injuries

We, at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County, would like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving. We hope you stay healthy and safe during these unprecedented times. Things might not go as traditionally as they normally would in 2020, but we still have the comfort of small family gatherings and great food to look forward to. SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull asks you and your family to be as safe as possible this Thanksgiving. And we are here to help.

As much as we love Thanksgiving; it is also the nation’s leading day for cooking fires. The number of cooking fires is actually three times as high than any other day of the year.

Why is this? We all cook a lot throughout the year. Why is Thanksgiving so different? Jammed stovetops, crowded kitchens, turkey fryers, and candles are just a few of the culprits.

When you are cooking multiple dishes for Thanksgiving things can get messy. And I am not just talking about the amount of dirty pots and pans. Make sure you are starting with a clean slate. The stove, oven, and microwave should all be wiped down and cleaned. Remove any residual food and grease from burners. Stay in the kitchen and do not leave your dishes unattended. Make sure the set a timer for the turkey and check it frequently. Keep a flame-resistant oven mitt, potholder, or lid close by to smother the flames if need be. If you should have an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed. Make sure your smoke alarms are operational and working before starting any cooking.

Turkey fryers should never be used inside the home, your garage, or a covered patio. Make sure oil is not overfilled. Most fires occur because of the oil. It can spill and tip over which leads to fires, burns and other serious injuries. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in the case of emergency.

According to the USFA, candles are responsible for an estimated 15,600 residential fires a year. More than half of the total are due to placing them too close to flammable holiday decorations. Keep flames isolated and away from fabrics.

Should you ever need SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County’s assistance with fire restoration---we are always here to help. We are here 24/7, 365 days a year, and even on Thanksgiving. We thank our community for making us the premier restoration company in the area. We wish you and your family the best. Call us at 330.392.6355 our experienced professionals can help with any size job, large or small. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us to you.

After the Fire - Cleaning Versus Replacing, Niles, OH

11/10/2020 (Permalink)

image of residential kitchen and corridor with visible smoke/fire damage Our team is prepared with the necessary equipment and know-how in case of a fire emergency in the Niles, Cortland, Girard area.

Going through your personal memories and belongings after a fire is one of the hardest tragedies you can imagine. Deciding what to keep or throw away can literally be gut-wrenching. We, at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County, know and understand how difficult this time can be. And we are here to advise and help you throughout this difficult time.

Here are some things that must hit the throw-away list no matter what.

  • Burned clothing, while some (smoke damaged clothing) can be cleaned by professionals, burned clothing is a different story. Smoke and soot can sit in the fibers of your clothing and can not only irritate your skin, but it can also carry harmful odors.
  • Toiletries, Make-up, and other Cosmetics carry ingredients that can be affected by the high heat of the fire. These items must also be thrown away due to contaminants from the extinguisher and chemicals used by firefighters.
  • Medicine can also be affected due to fire. The potency levels can decrease because of high heat, smoke, and soot.
  • Canned food is something a lot of folks think they can salvage. But think again. The heightened heat can cause bacteria to activate inside of the jars or cans.

Rest assured. Not everything is damaged by fire. There are some things that can be cleaned and restored after a home fire.

  • Smoke damaged clothing may be salvaged if there is no burn damage. Wash clothes in warm water as often as needed. Use bleach (if possible) and tri-sodium phosphate. It can be found at paint stores.
  • Cooking utensils and pots and pans can be cleaned and restored after a fire. They should be washed with soapy water, rinsed, and then polished with a fine-powdered cleaner. You can polish copper and brass with special polish, salt sprinkled on a piece of lemon, or salt sprinkled on a cloth saturated with vinegar.
  • Leather and Books - Wipe leather goods with a damp cloth, then with a dry cloth. When leather goods are dry, clean with saddle soap. You can use fine-grade steel wool or a suede brush on suede. Rinse leather and suede jackets in cold water and dry away from heat and sun.
  • Photographs are the most treasured of home items. Try not to peel photos away from one another to prevent ripping and tearing. Soak photos in clear, clean water. Rinse thoroughly and allow photos to separate on their own. If they stay wet for long---they can accumulate mold damage. Dry them by wrapping them in plastic wrap and freeze them, then thaw and wash a few at a time. After washing the photos, dry them image side up on a smooth hard surface like a glass table.

SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is experienced and ready to respond to any home fire. A fast response and immediate action can limit damages and restoration costs. Our trained technicians have specialized equipment and resources for any size job, large or small. Our team is prepared with the necessary equipment and know-how in case of a fire emergency in the Niles, Cortland, Girard area.

Removing The Smell of Cigarette Smoke

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

burning cigarette lying on a flat surface Cigarette smell can linger around and cause unpleasant odor for a long time after the last cigarette has been put out

Whether it’s from a guest or family member staying in your home, previous tenants, or even yourself, cigarette smell can linger around and cause unpleasant odor for a long time after the last cigarette has been put out.

There are a few methods you can try to reduce or eliminate the odor in your home so you can breathe easy.

  1. Wash your clothes and other soft items

One of the easiest ways to deodorize your home is to simply use your washing machine. Porous items such as clothing, bedding, and stuffed toys can trap odors and contribute to the unpleasant smell in your home. Washing everything you can will help reduce some of the smell.

  1. Use a dry-cleaning service

For items that you cannot toss in a washing machine, dry cleaning is an option. Dry cleaning typically involves using cleaning solvents to remove dirt and contaminants from your clothing. Unfortunately, the cleaning solvents do not always penetrate the material and it may not be able to entirely remove the odor in some cases.

  1. Clean Walls and Floors

Cigarette smoke, and the substances in it, can cling to your walls and flooring. Doing a thorough clean of your home may be able to remove some of the lingering odor. You should scrub your walls with a mild detergent and deep clean any carpeted areas.

  1. Hire a professional cleaning company

If you are unable to get rid of the smell on your own, a cleanup and restoration service can help. Not only will they have the experience and expertise necessary to thoroughly clean your home, they will also have access to special equipment. This includes equipment such as ozone machines that can change the chemical compounds of smoke molecules and will be more effective at home deodorization than a home remedy.

While it may be frustrating to have such an unpleasant smell permeating your home, remember that there are several ways that you can remove smoke odor. If you are unsuccessful on your own, call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County! We are fire and water restoration experts.

Preventing House Fires in Southern Trumbull County | National Burn Awareness Week

The American Burn Association has recognized February 2-8, 2020 as “Burn Awareness Week” with this year’s theme being Contact Burns.

According to a National Fire Protection Association report issued in October of 2019, just over one-quarter (27%) of reported fires in the US are home fires, while four out of every five injuries reported had home fires at the root of the incident.

There are five main causes to all home fires and fire casualties: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. Over the five-year period of 2013-2017, fires caused an annual average of 2,620 deaths, and 11,220 civilian injuries with $6.9 billion in property damage.

Fire prevention is the single most important aspect of educating people on fire and safety. Fire prevention can be categorized into two main categories: Home and Commercial.

Residential

  • Smoking Indoors – Smoking is a huge fire hazard, with several deaths per year being traced back to people lighting a cigarette near a source of gas and or falling asleep with one in their hands.
  • Cooking – In 2016, cooking was responsible for 6.6% of all house fire deaths. When preparing food, it is never smart to leave the stove unattended.
  • Maintain Appliances and Electrical Wiring – When moving to a new place be sure to have your wiring checked by a professional. Faulty wiring and electrical malfunction resulted in 9.6% of all fatal building fires.

Commercial

  • Supervise and Clean Work Areas – To thoroughly prevent fires, adequate supervision can be required. Any minor mistake can result in a fire especially with no supervision. The work space also needs to be cleaned sufficiently to prevent an accumulation of combustible materials.
  • Workplace Machinery – To fully protect your workplace, machinery that is in constant use needs to be checked and maintained often. Failure to do so, puts the machine at risk of malfunctioning leading to fire and employee injury.
  • Proper Fire Training – Employees in specific industries should be required to complete a fire prevention course. Making this practice a yearly requirement can be very beneficial in the prevention of commercial fires.

The highly trained and licensed experts at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County understand how important your home/business is to you. While in the hustle and bustle of life, a fire and a preventable one at that can really be a burden.

We pride ourselves in being faster to any size disaster! Our experts will help guide you through a crisis like this and eventually make it “Like it never even happened.”

How We Can Prevent Holiday Home Hazards

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

wires tangled with cords unorganized Holiday Fire Safety Tips from the leaders in fire restoration!

“Wires here…wires there… wires, wires everywhere!”  A phrase that conjures up an image in your mind I’m sure. If your home is anything like mine this time of year, it consists of ‘rigged’ holiday decorations that somehow manage to generate the holiday spirit.

Regardless, the holiday season is certainly the most enjoyable time of year. Unfortunately, due to the excessive amount of electrical home décor being used, unexpected house fires are all too common. There are ways to avoid this danger and most of these preventative measures only require a little common sense.

To help prevent house fires, keep the following in mind throughout the holiday season:

  • When it comes to caring for your live Christmas tree, the org says to keep it watered and far away from any heat sources (fireplaces, radiators, temporary heaters). When decorating the tree, consider LED lighting. They use a lot less electricity and are much safer.
  • Food is a big part of any holiday. Your oven and cook top will be humming with activity. Whether you have a gas or electric oven/stove, fires can erupt as a result of grease buildups. Keep these cooking units as clean as possible. A drip pan may be a good idea to prevent the grease from accumulating.
  • Electric outlets and power strips tend to get overwhelmed in the effort to create the desired decorative look. Surge strips should accompany extension cords as they will shut off itself should it becomes too heated. Finally, try not to pile presents and other decorations on the extension cords.

Other areas of focus to consider during the holiday season are:

  • The National Safety Council estimates thousands of people will visit the ER as a result of holiday related injuries. The majority result from holiday decorating accidents and food handling. Did you know… Mistletoe and holly berries are potentially poisonous if ingested.
  • Also, food poisoning is prevalent during the holidays due to cross contamination and the large amount of food being handled and prepared. Learning to properly store, prepare and serve food safely can help prevent food poisoning. Leftovers need to be put away properly and immediately.
  • Be selective when picking gifts for young children. Toys are now age-rated for safety reasons. Toys for children under the age of 3 are designed to be free of small pieces to help prevent choking. When buying for children under the age of 10, try to avoid any toys that require electricity.
  • Finally, and most importantly, be sure to check the batteries in you smoke detectors at least twice a year. The holiday season is a good time to insure a safe environment for guests and family. It also insures a great start to the new year!

Christmas Tree Fire Prevention in Trumbull County

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

closeup of christmas tree with red bulbs hanging Happy holidays from the team at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County!

The holiday season is a wonderful time for decorations and bright lights. Decorating Christmas trees has been a family tradition for many years. Whether you have an artificial tree or enjoying the smell of fresh pine throughout your home, it's important to be aware of the potential safety hazards present during the holiday season.

Statistics show that many fires over the holiday seasons are attributed to Christmas trees.

Fire Safety Tips:

  1. When picking out an artificial tree, it is important to pick one that has a “Flame Retardant” label on it. This indicates that the tree will resist burning and should extinguish in a quick amount of time.
  2. If you are looking for a real tree, pick a tree with more green needles than brown. If you see more brown needles while the tree is being shaken out, this is an indicator that the tree is dry and could possibly catch fire quickly. Regardless of what kind of tree you get, leave it three feet away from any heat source in the home.
  3. Make sure your tree does not block any exits in the event of an emergency.
  4. When you are ready to start decorating your tree, try to avoid connecting more than three strands of lights.
  5. Inspect all wires for signs of fraying and exposed wire.
  6. Finally, shut all lights off prior to going to bed and when you leave. Setting a timer can be helpful.

Be sure to keep these safety tips in mind as you prepare for Christmas this year. If you do however find yourself in need of fire restoration services - we are always here to help!

Happy holidays from the team at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County!

Fire Restoration Specialists in Trumbull County

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

bed frame with soot damaged drywall and carpeting With decades of experience SERVPRO has the equipment and passion it takes to make any size fire damage, ”Like It Never Even Happened”

Fire disasters are not events that any family wants to deal with. Surviving a fire is a traumatic experience for anyone to go through, but it is helpful to know a little bit about the restoration process in case you ever do run into this type of issue. There are a few different steps that will facilitate the restoration process, and each is critical to your family getting back up on their feet after a fire.

At a time when you feel like you may not know which way to turn, a fire restoration specialist – like our experienced professionals at SERVPRO – can step in and take the lead by offering services such as:

  • Emergency Services – After a fire you may need immediate temporary fixes such as Roof repairs, board ups and tarp.
  • Water Extraction and Restoration – Water damage is the last thing you think of when it comes to a fire. However, many times, fires are put out by firefighters pumping thousands of gallons of water to douse it, causing water damage to a home.
  • SERVPRO will first and foremost work to remove the water from the home. Leaving water in a home for a long period of time can result in mold growing which can make the home more dangerous to live in.
  • Debris Clean up - Cleaning debris allows the restoration company to get an even better look at what damage was done so that they can begin to assess an action plan to determine what is salvageable and non-salvageable
  • Smoke and Soot Removal – Soot is a fine black to brown powder formed through incomplete combustion. The process that forms it also makes it slightly sticky, and it can be found clinging to things which can be commonly found in and on horizontal and vertical surfaces, walls and inside HVAC system ducting. Leftover smoke and soot following a fire can adversely affect your health. Children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk when exposed to smoke and soot. Smoke and soot can also take a toll on your personal items resulting in unseen damage to your home’s structure. The cleanup of smoke and soot is time sensitive. Acidic in nature, it effects each surface of your home differently, rapidly taking its toll unless quickly and carefully addressed. SERVPRO performs soot removal in your residence, rooting it out even in the hard-to-reach places.
  • Textiles and Contents SERVPRO professional team is highly trained in textile and content cleaning and inventory. Ranging from pack out of your home, to our state-of-the-art ESPORTA machine, inventory of non-salvageable and salvageable contents and cleaning of your contents.

No matter the technique required or the time it takes – we are here to help!

With decades of experience SERVPRO has the equipment and passion it takes to make any size fire damage, ”Like it never even happened.”

Keeping Your Pets Safe in a Home Fire in Howland, OH

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

roof of house engulfed in flames with smoke coming from the sides SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County wants to help keep your family safe and recover as soon as possible from any fire, water, or storm damage.

“A dog is a man’s best friend.” For most people, their pets are more than just an animal they keep inside their house. Pets often become a valued, loved, and cared for companion by members of the whole family. You probably have given some thought and planning into how you will keep your family safe in case of a fire, but do you have a safety plan for your pets?

In case of a fire, your family members should always be your first concern, but your pets can be part of your plan rather than an afterthought. Some thought should be given to protect their well-being in advance.

Tips for Emergency Pet Preparation:

  • Keep all shots and vaccinations up to date and keep records in a portable firebox. You can also store records on your phone or iPad using apps like Dropbox.
  • Make sure the person responsible for pet safety in a fire knows how to get them out of the house safely. It is recommended this person an adult, rather than a child or teenager.
  • Have an emergency bag for your pet with your pet’s normal food, toys, medications, and maybe a small blanket.
  • Take preventative measures by using only flame-less candles, and removing any stove top or oven control knobs that pets or small children could accidentally turn.

Tips for Evacuation:

  • Preparation is key. Each person in the home should be assigned another person or a buddy to help everyone get out of the house safely. This is a good idea for your pets as well. Assign someone to making sure the pets get out of the house safely.
  • Run practice fire evacuation drills. This helps everyone in your family learn how to get out of the house quickly. Include your pets in this drill and make sure everyone knows the plan for pet safety.

Following a fire emergency, the trauma of smoke and fire damage can be overwhelming for the whole family and your pets. The faster the cleanup is completed, the faster everyone in the family can begin to heal and recover. If your family, or business is suffering from fire damage, please call your local restoration experts.

How to Stop a Beeping Fire Alarm

9/19/2019 (Permalink)

white smoke detector with red light lit and smoke coming from the bottom If your Trumbull County home needs mitigation from fire damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County.

When you hear a fire alarm going off in your home or business, what is your first thought? Probably, “oh no, where’s the fire?” But you’ve searched your home or business and everything is safe and there’s no sign fire of fire or smoke. A beeping fire alarm usually signals an emergency – usually.

What about when there is no fire, but your alarm continuously beeps? It turns out, there could several reasons that your alarm may be annoying you, rather than warning you.

  1. Reset Needed

Before you go out buying a new system or even new batteries, you may want to reset your detector first. If you are unsure about how to reset your smoke detector please refer to this video for additional help.

  1. Batteries

One of the more common causes for non-emergency related alarm beeping is the need for new batteries. If the battery in your detector is not operating at full power, the detector cannot function properly and may beep to signal that the battery is dying.

  1. Environmental Interference

If resetting and replacing the batteries still don’t silence your smoke detector, try to clean the device of any dust or other particles. Dust, cobwebs, and even temperature can cause your detector to beep. Try blowing air your detectors to remove any unwanted debris and then repeat step 1 and 2 as necessary.

As you can see, there are a few potential culprits responsible for the incessant beeping taking over your home. If none of these solutions fix your problem with your smoke detector, it may be time to replace it. The lifetime of a smoke alarm is typically between 8-10 years. If you don’t remember when you bought your smoke alarm, you can always check on the back for the manufacturing date.

Having a reliable detector makes acting quickly during an emergency possible and provide peace of mind. If your Trumbull County home needs mitigation from fire damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County. We have a team that you can trust and a proven restoration process. We make it “Like it never even happened.”

Unique Window Board-Up Method in Warren, OH

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Here is an 'inside the home' view of SERVPRO's unique Window Board-Up method

Fire damage can be overwhelming when disaster strikes. The result usually leaves the homeowner with a smoke and soot filled home. The feelings and stress level during this time can be overwhelming and leave the homeowner with several questions racing through their head. Who do I call? What do I do first? Who can I trust?

Calling SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County is the answer to all of these questions. SERVPRO can help the homeowner with the fire restoration process from start to finish.

In order to properly secure and preserve the structure, SERVPRO’s Tension Board-Up method is used. This unique process increases security for a home or business owner after the fire loss has occurred. The tension method also decreases damage to the window frame during the rebuilding and restoration process.

To preserve the window frame, a sheet of oriented strand board (OSB) is placed on the exterior of the window. Carriage bolts are then drilled through the OSB directly into the 2x4's that are placed in the home's interior side of the window frame. The 2x4's are measured and cut to fit the width of the interior portion of the window frame. The carriage bolts are not drilled directly into the window frame. This results in a decreased amount of damage to the structure of the home or commercial building. The window is then secured from the inside to increase security.

Christmas Tree Fire Cleanup Company in Warren, Ohio

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Cause of Christmas Tree Fires

A common reason is due to electrical problems. There have been many instances where an extension cord has failed while under pressure of an object and caused a fire.

Prevent Christmas Tree Fires

With real trees there are many precautions and care that needs to be given. Watering the Christmas tree daily is necessary to prevent water level dropping below the cut end of the tree. Dry trees are the biggest culprit in these fires because they can burn faster than newspaper, causing the fire to spread rapidly.

Safety Tips

  • Making sure string lights have no loose connections
  • Use a single extension cord that is not longer than needed
  • Use UL- approved lights
  • Turn off lights before bed
  • Water the tree daily
  • Keep candles away from the tree.

Stay connected with us on Facebook for tips and promotions! Give us a call (330)392-6355 in the event of damages occurring from fire, water, mold, or storm.

Holiday Fire Prevention Tips

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County if you experience a fire or smoke damage emergency this holiday season 330-392-6355

There are several ways to prevent a fire around the holidays just by eliminating hazards. Keep your holidays merry & bright with these safety tips:

Christmas Trees, Lights and Electrical Safety

  • Inspect lights before plugging in and examine for damage. Throw away any kinked, frayed, worn or severed light strands
  • Never overload a circuit
  • Turn off all lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed - consider using a timer to automatically turn off the lights each night
  • Use a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) where water and electricity can potentially mix. (Your GFCI outlet will have a test and reset button on the front)
  • Water your Christmas tree daily to prevent the tree from drying out and easily catching on fire

Space Heaters, Safety Detectors and Electric Cords

  • Use space heaters carefully and as temporary heating - do not leave space heaters running or plugged in unattended and do not leave them on while going to sleep
  • Test your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors (which should be placed in each bedroom, hallways and each level of the home including the basement)
  • Only use heavy-duty extension cords that are grounded for fire safety. Never run extension cords under rugs or in areas where they can cause a slip, trip or fall.

Candle, Chimney & Fireplace

  • Candles account for two out of every five home fires each year! Never leave the room with a candle lit. Consider using a flameless, battery operated candle
  • Fireplaces and chimneys should be inspected and cleaned by a professional every year
  • Keep your fireplace clear and free of debris by cleaning the ashes after each fire

Always have a fire extinguisher handy on each floor and plan for an emergency. Having a plan prepared can prevent injuries and accelerating the process of leading everyone back to safety.

Smoke Damage Cleanup Company in Girard, Ohio

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Southern Trumbull County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Soot Tags after Fires in Nies, Ohio

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Soot Tags Formation

Soot tags occur from a synthetic/petroleum based source burn. During a fire smoke and soot circulate throughout the house and the heat moves toward cool air when trying to equalize the temperature. In the areas with less circulation the soot tags will begin to form and can look like soot on spider webs.

However, soot tags are just chains of soot that gather in the areas with low circulation that look like webs. These can occur immediately or over time and reoccur even after dusting them off.

Prevent Soot Tags

Stay away from spraying water on the area to clean it because it will smear and stain. To help prevent this from happening, service your furnace annually to ensure it is working properly to help deal with soot. The best way to remove these soot tags are to contact your local SERVPRO in your Trumbull County area.

Contact us if you are dealing with soot at (330)392-6355 and follow us on Facebook to stay in touch.

Preventing Thanksgiving Fires in Warren, OH

11/16/2017 (Permalink)

Keep your home safe this Thanksgiving with some useful safety tips!

Is it your first time hosting Thanksgiving this year or are you still new to cooking Thanksgiving Dinner?

Before you start to brine your turkey and prepare for your meal, it is important to educate yourself on the dangers of home fires of Thanksgiving.

According to the National Fire Protection Association Fire Analysis & Research Division, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Unattended cooking is also the biggest factor in these fires. Follow the following safety tips to make sure your Thanksgiving is disaster free!

Cooking Safety Tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top. Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires.
  • Check on your turkey frequently. Turkeys can burn easily.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer do not come in contact with any water OR especially children.

Turkey Frying Safety Tips

If you opt out of cooking your cooking in the oven traditionally and decide to fry it, follow these safety tips.

  • Stay away from the house. Set up your turkey fire more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away to prevent this from happening
  • Find flat ground. The oil must be steady and even to ensure safety.
  • Use a thawed and dry turkey. Extra water from a frozen turkey will cause your oil to spill over and if it spills onto a burner, a fire will immediately start.
  • Monitor the oil temperature. Fire do not have their own thermometers so keep one on you at all times!
  • HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER READY AT ALL TIMES!

Halloween Fire Safety in Niles, Ohio

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Halloween is only days away. But did you know that decorations, costume choices, and candles inside jack-o-lanterns can cause home fires?

From 2011-2015, U.S. fire departments reported an estimated average of 840 home structure fires per year that began with decorations. The fires also caused 36 civilian injuries and nearly $11.4 million in direct property damage per year.

Below are some safety tips to keep your family and trick or treaters safe this halloween

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns.
  • Watch choosing costumes with trailing fabric. If an open flame were near, the flame could watch on the fabric.
  • Watch your decorations! Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper can catch fire very easily. This is why it is important to not use any type of open candle whatsoever since decorations are easily flammable. Instead, use other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep exits of your home clear from decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Most importantly, MAKE SURE ALL SMOKE ALARMS ARE WORKING IN YOUR HOME!

If an accident does happen this Halloween, we provide top of the line fire restoration services to make your fire feel "Like it never even happened." Give us a call at 330-392-6355 to schedule your appointment.

Commercial or house fires can happen at any moment. But when disaster strikes, do you have a plan of action for escaping and notifying first respond services? Here are a few helpful tips and steps you can take to create an escape plan as well as help prevent a fire from happening.

  • Install smoke detectors on each level of your home and near sleeping areas. It is also important to test the batteries monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. Changing the batteries every Daylight Savings Time is also another tip to maintain working smoke alarms.
  • Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two ways to escape from every room in your home. This is a lot more difficult than you think. Using a template helps with these. These are available online.
  • Practice your fire escape plan at least once a year. Designate a meeting place outside that is a safe distance from your home. Also practicing different crawling and stop, drop, and roll techniques helps!
  • Program Police and Fire Department numbers in your phone. Dialing911 is a given but having your local police and fire department's numbers in your phone helps as well.

When to Use a Fire Extinguisher

2/16/2017 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers should be available in every building you are in, including your Girard home. Misconceptions about fire extinguishers are that they should and can be used on all types of fires in any situation. However, there are many types of fire extinguishers such as water, chemical, foam, etc. Each extinguisher is designed to put out different typed of fires. You should only try to put out a fire if it is contained, if you are safe from toxic smoke, you have a means of escaping that isn’t blocked by the fire. You should make sure the building if evacuated before extinguishing so the toxic air from smoke and the extinguisher does not harm anyone inside. If the fire is too much to handle, evacuate the building and call the fire department so they can handle it. If you experience fire damage, contact the professionals at your local SERVPRO at (330)392-6355 and follow us on Facebook for more information.

Most Common Valentine's Day Fire Hazards to Avoid

  1. Leaving a candle unattended

It is imperative to have someone in the room where a candle is being used to prevent any fire damages.

  1. Placing them next to inflammable objects

Placing a candle in a safe atmosphere is important. Try to keep them on a flat surface away from any drapes or other inflammable objects.

  1. Having an non-functioning fire alarm

A fire alarm should be functioning at all times throughout the year. Provide a service and inspection annually, to ensure your fire alarm is functioning properly.

  1. Dismissing candle holders

Some individuals feel a candle holder is unnecessary, but this could lead to a dangerous situation. The candle holder will protect the candle from falling and keeping wax from unwanted areas.

Christmas Tree Fires

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree Fires

The holiday season tends to have the most house fires. Some of these fires are started by Christmas trees. There are many ways that Christmas tree fires get started. One most frequent reason is due to electrical problems. There have been instances where an extension cord has failed while under pressure of an object and causes a fire. With real trees there are many precautions and care that needs to be given.  Watering the Christmas tree daily is absolutely necessary because if the water level drops below the cut end of the tree no water can be absorbed. Dry trees are the biggest culprit in these fires because they can burn faster than newspaper, causing the fire to spread rapidly. One in 31 Christmas tree fires is deadly. Keep your family safe in your Girard home by making sure string lights have no loose connections, using a single extension cord that isn’t longer than needed, use UL- approved lights, turn off lights before bed, water the tree daily, and keep candles away from the tree.

Forest Fire

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

How forest fires are caused

A forest fire is an uncontrolled fire occurring in nature. Most forest fires are man made. A heat source combines with dry leaves and grass which release volatile gases and combines with oxygen in the air and starts the burn which creates more heat and gas and the fire spreads. The steeper the terrain the faster the fire burns because of the hot air rising into the other trees.

Affects of Wildfires

Forest fires cause damage to houses, offices, vegetation, and anything in its way. Cities have to spend millions on fighting them with aircraft, personnel, chemicals, and logistics. These fires wipe away almost all organic value of soil. However, most plants easily grow back and have good recovery. Some plants even thrive after a wildfire.

Essential Fire Safety Instructions

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Most of us are informed of what actions to apply immediately during a fire, but it is important to enlighten children of what to do. When a fire occurs it is important to stay low at all times until you are out of the endangered premises. Staying low on the ground will keep you from inhaling too much smoke. Your first priority should be evacuating the structure immediately and making sure everyone else has an understanding of the main goal. Sometimes it is impossible to leave the endangered area, but it is essential to understand to never hide under a bed or in a closet. If you have a phone on hand you can call 911 and let them know you are trapped. If any apparel that you are wearing catches on fire, do not panic! Just immediately stop, drop, and roll on the ground with your hands covering your face.

Tips to Survive the Dark

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

Candle Crayons

Break the point off the candle and use the paper label as a wick. Light the paper label at the end of the crayon; the crayon should last about thirty minutes.

Crisco Candles

If you need a long lasting candle substitution, then using Crisco is the answer. This alternative will last for thirty days! Open a can of Crisco all vegetable shortening and insert a wick substitution, such as a mop strand or even a shred of a cotton t-shirt.

Gum Lighter

If you do not have a way to light these candle substitutions because there is no form of electricity or a lighter available, you can create a small fire with gum wrapper and a battery. Use the foil wrapper and a AA battery to create a flame. Tear the wrapper and let the foil touch the positive and negative battery terminals so the wrapper can catch fire.

Fire Safety Tips

11/14/2016 (Permalink)

There are several ways to prevent a fire just by eliminating hazards. Watch out for extension cords and multiple wires that are hidden behind carpets and curtains. Overloading Circuits is a common mistake especially for families who possess multiple electronics because they do not split the devices and run a different circuit.

There should always be an operating fire extinguisher and smoke detectors installed in all homes. It is important to have a plan prepared for emergencies with people you live with. During a tragic incident it can be difficult to immediately take action and handle the situation. Having a plan prepared can prevent injuries and accelerating the process of leading everyone back to safety. Also focusing on bringing yourself back to safety is essential, which means leaving personal items behind. This situation can be hard, but it is imperative that you are not putting yourself in a dangerous situation.
