Avoid Unwanted Appliance Disasters

5/16/2019 (Permalink)

Most household appliances won’t function very well past their expected lifespan. Their age can creep by quickly and cause an unexpected water loss.

Most household appliances won’t function very well past their expected lifespan. Even if you have kept to a maintenance schedule with a skilled technician, there’s still no guarantee. If these appliances utilize water, an unexpected in-home disaster could be waiting for you one day.

Most appliances have a lifespan of 10-15 years. The expected lifespan of many appliances differ depending on their frequency of use. Those used more frequently will obviously require more maintenance to reach their lifespan.

Here’s a look at some commonly used appliances that utilize a water source and when it may be time to think about replacing them.

WASHING MACHINE – 10 years

Washing machines have a shorter lifespan than their neighbor (dryer). You may consider replacing them at the same time just to keep the appearances similar. But, if you don’t care about the matching look, think about a replacement when you start seeing this:

  • Excessive noise during a cycle
  • The drum does not fill with water
  • The unit shakes excessively while in use
  • Water leaks onto the floor

REFRIGERATOR – 13 years

The signs of a failing refrigerator are hard to ignore because we rely on it to keep the food we eat fresh. Repairs can reach into the mid-hundreds and it could make financial sense to replace instead of repair. It may be time to consider a new fridge if you see any of these signs:

  • Food spoils prematurely
  • A condensation build-up visible inside or out
  • The freezer begins to show a frost buildup
  • The unit is louder than normal
  • The back of the unit is excessively hot

DISHWASHER – 9 years

Anyone will vouch for the utility a dishwasher provides to the homeowner. If efficient, they can save on water and energy usage. If your dishwasher is approaching a decade old, it may be time to think about replacing it. If not, before you spend big money on repairs, think about replacement when you see these early signs:

  • A door that won’t latch properly
  • Rust flakes on the floor
  • The unit won’t drain properly
  • The water doesn’t get hot enough
  • The inner shell showing cracks

These water reliable appliances are some of the most frequently used appliances in a home. They have a decent lifespan, but their age can creep by quickly and leave us with an unexpected water disaster in the home if they fail.

Water can wreak havoc in your home as it finds its way into hidden places where, if unnoticed, can produce mold growth.

SERVPRO of Ashtabula & North Trumbull Counties can help with any of your water restoration needs. Call us at (440) 319-3360. We are available 24/7/365 for emergency service.

The Call to Make For Water Removal in Conneaut

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Based off of the category of water, we apply different processes in order to make it safe again.

By definition, water mitigation is the process of reducing or preventing the amount of water damage that happens after a flood or leak occurs in a home or building.

There are many types and causes of water damage. Water damage can result from excessive rain which can lead to roof leaks, foundation leaks or sump pump malfunctions. Also, plumbing issues such as a broken pipe, burst supply line or toilet overflow are very common types as well.

Categories of Water Loss

These categories are defined by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). SERVPRO professionals are certified by IICRC standards and are trained to properly handle all types of water damage. Based off of the category of water, we apply different processes in order to make it safe again.

  • Category 1: Clean liquid from sanitary source (water fountain, sink, etc.)
  • Category 2: Liquid from unsanitary sources (toilet overflow, dishwasher, etc.) that can cause illness if ingested
  • Category 3: Liquid from unsanitary sources (sewer backup, river, stagnant pool, etc.) that could cause severe illness or death if ingested

At SERVPRO, we incorporate a system that is consistent across all mitigation jobs that includes:

Visual Inspection - SERVPRO will complete a visual inspection for damages. By doing an inspection, it allows us to find the source of your water loss. Finding the source allows us to plan how to address your damage.

Water Extraction - After we inspect the loss and have figured out how to stop any further damage, we extract the standing water. SERVPRO uses professional water extraction tools to remove the water from your home or business without further damaging your property.

Drying Process - Even though the water may now be gone, the moisture in your home still remains. Moisture seeps into ceilings, walls and carpet. Carpet pad, cabinets and duct work are great places for water to hide. To remove the leftover moisture, we use commercial dehumidifiers and air movers.

Contaminated Surface Removal - If you have any black water or mold contaminated surfaces in your home, we will take further steps to remove them. It is important for us to treat any abnormalities as soon as possible.

Cleaning Process - SERVPRO technicians clean up any leftover debris from the water damage removal process to help get your property back to preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Ashtabula & North Trumbull Counties is available 24/7 for any emergency cleanup that is needed in your area! We understand the stress that you endure when water damage occurs in your home. We work to get you back to normal ASAP!

If you are experiencing water damage call us at (440) 319-3360 to begin the mitigation process and prevent any further damages.

SERVPRO Can Handle Water Damage to Hardwood

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

This Injectidry floor mat system is used to dry high risk areas of hidden moisture in and under flooring.

When you hear ‘Water Damage’ it’s usually associated with a tragic event or an unforeseen disaster to those who experience it. The causes of water damage can vary in size, from a simple pipe burst to flooding from a violent storm. Whatever water damage occurs, it’s important to stay educated on the mitigation and restoration processes.

Water moves very quickly and will ultimately reach its lowest point. Once the water reaches it settling point and remains there for a long period of time, the more damage it will cause. If materials such as carpet, padding, sub flooring are completely saturated, they are likely ruined.

HARDWOOD AREAS

Many homes today contain hardwood floors instead of carpet. Kitchens, living rooms, dens and dining rooms are utilizing hardwood flooring at an increasing rate. Water tends to get trapped in the natural wood grooves and crevices. If not dried properly, these wet areas will support mold growth. Mold is extremely likely to find a home on hardwood flooring because it is made of organic material.

Most of the restoration equipment today is designed to extract water from carpet. This equipment does lend itself to extracting on hardwood flooring, depending on the amount of water.

If the hardwood flooring goes untreated for a period of time, several unfavorable things can happen. Morphing, splitting and cupping can progress to the point the floor becomes unsteady and unsafe.

Nonetheless, when the damage occurs, call SERVPRO of Ashtabula & North Trumbull Counties at (440) 319-3360 right away to give them a fighting chance to save your existing floor from further damage.

HOW DO WE SAVE THE HARDWOOD FLOOR?

In order to save hardwood flooring, one option is to initiate the dehumidifying process as soon as possible. Dehumidifying is probably not going to get all of the water, but it is certainly a necessary step in order to reach some of that trapped water we spoke of earlier. If water still remains after extensive dehumidification, pulling the affected areas and replacing portions of the floor may need to occur. In severe cases, total floor removal and replacement may be necessary.

A second option is the Injectidry System. SERVPRO uses this floor mat system to properly dry out hardwood floors. This Injectidry floor mat system is used to dry high risk areas of hidden moisture in and under flooring. It is mostly used for hardwood flooring but can also be used for marble, tile and sub-flooring and cabinetry. In the end it can save the homeowner the cost of having to tear out and replace all the hardwood flooring.

Whether you need a professional opinion, mitigation or drying and dehumidification, call SERVPRO of Ashtabula & North Trumbull Counties at (440) 319-3360.

Frozen Pipes

2/9/2017 (Permalink)

Use a blow dyer to warm pipes

During winter in your Geneva area pipes often freeze during winter months. When temperatures get down around 20 degrees and sometimes above if the pipes are exposed to cold windy air usually due to cracks in walls pipes will freeze. When water in the pipes freeze it expands into ice putting pressure on the pipe and can cause it to burst leading to a broken pipe and a flood in your home. Pipes that are metal or water lines to things like pools, sprinklers, and interior pipes can burst no matter what the water is flowing through if it’s frozen. To prevent pipes from freezing it’s important to keep garage doors closed if water supply is in garage, open cabinets and doors, let water drip in facets, and keep it warm in the area where pipes are. If frozen pipes occur, keep the faucet open while warming the pipe; apply heat to the section of pipe, but avoid using open flame devices. To avoid this problem keep pipes warm. In the event that your pipes burst and flooding occurs, call the professionals to extract the water and make it like it never even happened at (440)319-3360. Also follow us on Facebook for updates and promotions.

Pipe Burst

12/12/2016 (Permalink)

Pipe bursts

There are a few reasons pipes can burst, but the main one is because of freezing conditions.  Other reasons pipes many burst are due to age, misuse, or damage. When pipes burst they cause damage to property, homes, and sometimes entire areas of a town and roads for days. The most devastating part of pipe bursts aren’t the cost of the repair or even the loss of water, it is the damage that the water does to the homes. 9/12/2016 (Permalink)

Dressers and other furniture can easily damage from water or liquid products. There are simple steps you can follow to prevent your home furniture from water damage.

Materials Needed:

-Damp Rag

-Stirring Stick

-Bristle Brush

-Sand paper

-Naptha

  1. Use a damp rag to wipe down the dusty surface
  2. Take the polyurethane with a stick without shaking the can
  3. Dip one inch of the brush into the polyurethane and begin running the brush in one direction along the dresser or any other wooden furniture
  4. Another way to apply the polyurethane is with a rag to eliminate air bubbles, but you will need to thin the product by adding the same amount of naptha
  5. To smooth out any bumps, rub the wet sand paper in a circular motion onto the wood

This process should eliminate potential water spillage from affecting your wooden furniture.

Smoke & Soot Damage Can Cause Pervasive Odor in Your Ashtabula Home

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Ashtabula & North Trumbull Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
